Door Hanging in Nottingham

A door that catches, drops or won't latch is one of those jobs that nags at you for months. I hang internal and external doors across Nottingham so they sit square in the frame, swing true and shut with a clean, even gap. Locks, handles and hinges all fitted to match.

The work, in short

One pair of hands from quote to finish. The man who prices the job is the man who turns up to do it.

  • Internal and external doors supplied or hung
  • Tired doors re-hung, eased and adjusted to shut properly
  • Locks, latches, handles and hinges fitted
  • Fire doors fitted to regulations

Most door fitting in Nottingham comes down to two things: getting the door square in an opening that almost never is, and setting the ironmongery so it shuts first time without slamming. I rebate the hinges by hand, cut the latch and lock in clean, and ease the door until the gap round it is even top to bottom. New internal doors, a heavy front door, fire doors for a rental or HMO, or just a tired old door that needs taking off and re-hanging properly, it's all the same careful job. If you've already bought the doors I'll fit those; if you want me to supply them as well, just say.

Want to see how it looks finished? Have a look at recent door hanging work in the gallery. It often goes hand in hand with repairs & second fix, fitted wardrobes & alcoves and kitchens & utilities, so it's easy to get the lot done in one go. There's more on joiner, carpenter or handyman over on the blog.

FAQs

Door Hanging: common questions

How much does it cost to hang a door in Nottingham?+

It depends on the door and the opening. A straightforward swap, taking an old door off and hanging a new one onto existing hinges, is at the cheaper end. A brand new door that needs the hinges, latch and lock all cut in from scratch takes longer, so it costs a bit more. If you've a few to do in one visit it works out better per door. I'll give you a fixed price in writing before any work starts.

Do you supply the doors or just fit them?+

Either way works. I can supply the doors and ironmongery for you, or fit doors you've already bought from somewhere like Howdens or B&Q. Plenty of people pick their own doors and just want a joiner to hang them properly, and that's no problem.

Can you fit fire doors?+

Yes. I fit fire doors to the regulations, with the right hinges, intumescent strips and gaps, which matters for rentals, HMOs and flats. If it's for a landlord or a building control sign-off, tell me up front so I fit it to the right standard.

My door sticks and won't shut, can you fix it rather than replace it?+

Usually, yes. A sticking door is often a dropped hinge, a swollen edge or a frame that's moved. I can ease and re-hang it so it shuts properly again without replacing the whole thing. Replacing is only worth it if the door itself is past saving.

Do you fit external and front doors too?+

Yes, internal and external. Front doors, back doors, composite and uPVC doors all get hung square and weather-tight, with the multipoint lock adjusted so it throws cleanly. An external door that doesn't seal properly is letting heat out, so it's worth getting right.

Can you change the locks and handles at the same time?+

Yes. Locks, latches, handles, hinges and letterplates all get fitted as part of the job. If you want a door re-keyed or a new lock to match the rest of the house, I'll sort that while I'm there.

How long does it take to hang a door?+

A single straightforward door is usually an hour or two. A new door needing the hinges and lock cut in takes longer, and a set of doors through a house is a day or so. I'll tell you roughly how long when I quote.

What areas do you cover for door fitting?+

I'm based in Nottingham and cover the surrounding areas, including Arnold, Carlton, Gedling, Bestwood, Mapperley and Sherwood. If you're nearby and not sure, just ask.

Do you fit bifold or sliding wardrobe doors?+

I fit bifold internal doors and sliding doors. Made-to-measure sliding and hinged wardrobe doors usually come as part of a fitted wardrobe job rather than a door on its own, so have a look at the fitted wardrobes page for that.

Can you trim a door to fit a new floor?+

Yes. New carpet, tiles or wood flooring often means the door now catches on the floor. I'll take it off, plane or cut the bottom to clear the new level, and re-hang it so it swings clean again.
