The smaller fixes that finish a room off, or sort a problem that's been bugging you for months. If you've been after a carpenter near you in Nottingham for the odd jobs, this is it. Sticking doors, dropped hinges, skirting, architrave and general second-fix carpentry, usually sorted in a visit or two.

The work, in short
One pair of hands from quote to finish. The man who prices the job is the man who turns up to do it.
- ✓Sticking doors and dropped hinges
- ✓Skirting, architrave and trims
- ✓Shelving and general second fix
- ✓Quick call-outs, no job too small
This is the work a lot of trades won't touch because it's too small to bother with, and it's exactly the carpentry I like doing. A door that's dropped and catches, skirting and architrave to replace after a plasterer's been, a shelf or two put up straight, a creaking floorboard, a cupboard door that won't sit right, internal door repairs and adjustments, easing a swollen door so it shuts again. Second-fix carpentry is all the finishing joinery that goes in once the building work's done, and it's the part that makes a room feel finished rather than nearly there. Most of these jobs are a visit or two, and I'll happily take on a list of them in one go so you're not chasing a carpenter for each one. No job too small.
Want to see how it looks finished? Have a look at recent repairs & second fix work in the gallery. It often goes hand in hand with door hanging, fitted wardrobes & alcoves and tiling, so it's easy to get the lot done in one go. There's more on joiner, carpenter or handyman over on the blog.

Repairs & Second Fix: common questions
Do you take on small carpentry jobs?+
Yes, small jobs are what this is all about. A few doors eased, some skirting replaced, a shelf put up, a sticking cupboard sorted. The little jobs other trades talk themselves out of are exactly the work I'm after. No job too small.
How much does a carpenter charge for small jobs in Nottingham?+
For odd jobs I usually work to a half-day or day rate, or give a fixed price for a set list of jobs. Lumping a few small jobs into one visit is the most cost-effective way to do it rather than calling someone out for each one. I'll tell you the cost before I start.
What's second-fix carpentry?+
Second fix is the finishing joinery that goes in after the structural and first-fix work is done, skirting, architrave, door hanging, handles, shelving and trims. It's the carpentry that makes a room look finished rather than a building site.
Can you fix a door that sticks or won't shut?+
Yes, that's one of the most common call-outs. A sticking door is usually a dropped hinge, a swollen edge or a frame that's moved. I ease and re-hang it so it shuts cleanly again, rather than you having to live with shouldering it shut.
Do you replace skirting boards and architrave?+
Yes. New skirting and architrave after plastering, decorating or a leak, or just swapping tired old boards for a fresh profile, all cut, fitted, mitred and ready for the decorator.
Can you put up shelves and hang things securely?+
Yes. Shelves, floating shelves, cabinets, mirrors and the like, fixed level and into the right fixings so they actually hold weight. Plasterboard walls need the proper fixings, which is half of why shelves fall down.
Are you a carpenter or a joiner?+
Both terms get used for the same person round here. Strictly, a joiner makes the timber items and a carpenter fits them on site, and I do both, building made-to-measure pieces and fitting them. So whether you've searched for a carpenter or a joiner in Nottingham, you're in the right place.
Do you do door repairs as well as new doors?+
Yes. Internal and external door repairs, easing sticking doors, sorting dropped or worn hinges, adjusting locks and latches and re-hanging doors that have gone out of square. Often a repair saves you replacing the whole door.
Can I give you a list of jobs to work through in one visit?+
That's the ideal way to do it. Write down everything that's been nagging you, the door, the shelf, the skirting, the cupboard, and I'll work through the lot in a visit or two. Much better value than separate call-outs.
What areas do you cover for repairs and carpentry?+
I cover Nottingham and the surrounding areas for repairs and second-fix carpentry, including Arnold, Carlton, Gedling, Bestwood, Mapperley and Sherwood. If you're nearby, just ask.
